A Complete Coconut Grove Transformation
Buying an older home in Coconut Grove or Coral Gables often means buying far more than its visible charm. Behind the mature trees, original details, and established setting may be decades of deferred maintenance, outdated systems, altered rooms, damaged finishes, and renovations that never fully belonged together. The challenge is not simply to decorate the house. It is to understand what can be preserved, what must be corrected, and what the residence could become once the underlying problems are resolved.
This approximately 60-year-old Coconut Grove home had not been meaningfully updated in more than three decades. The transformation extended throughout the property, from repairs to the roof and exterior walls to the pool, landscaping, staircase, interior layout, finishes, furnishings, and final installation. Before the decorative vision could emerge, the house itself had to be restored, opened, and brought back into working order.
Inside, a wall beneath the double-height ceiling was removed to reconnect the living and dining areas and allow the rooms to relate to one another more naturally. The fireplace was reworked as a dramatic violet-stone focal wall, and a custom library was built around both sets of French doors, with fluted wood detailing and deep teal wallcovering creating the moody, film-noir atmosphere the owners wanted.
The dining room took its direction from a monumental bejeweled peacock artwork, one of the owner’s most treasured pieces. Rather than treating the artwork as a finishing touch, the room was developed around its scale, color, and theatrical presence.
The primary suite moved into an entirely different mood. A hand-painted silk garden mural, pale robin’s-egg blue linens, and champagne-toned furnishings created the romantic fantasy the client envisioned. Because illness made frequent trips downstairs difficult, a private morning bar and built-in vanity were incorporated into the suite, allowing her to begin the day with greater comfort and independence.
For a client purchasing an older home, this is often the real work: seeing beyond its present condition, correcting what years of neglect or piecemeal renovation have left behind, and carrying the property from repair through completion under one clear design direction. The finished residence did not erase the home’s history. It gave the house another chapter.
